What is a Facelift?

A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure designed to address visible signs of aging in the face and upper neck. Over time, factors such as gravity, sun exposure, and aging lead to the loss of skin elasticity and sagging, wrinkles, creases, jowls, under-chin fat, and drooping cheeks. A facelift tightens the skin, lifting the underlying tissues and restoring a more youthful and refreshed appearance. However, a traditional facelift rarely achieves a result that leaves the patient delighted, as older techniques merely address the surface and can lead to an unnatural, pulled appearance.

What Is A Deep Plane Facelift?

The deep plane facelift is one of the most advanced techniques for facial rejuvenation and is far superior in creating natural, long-lasting results. The “deep plane” refers to the anatomic layer under the SMAS (Superficial Musculo-Aponeurotic System) in the face and under the platysma (muscle structure) in the neck. By releasing key ligaments within this deeper layer, the surgeon can reposition and elevate the facial soft tissues without creating tension on the skin, avoiding the “pulled” look associated with traditional facelifts.

With over 600 deep plane facelifts performed, Dr. Alemi’s precise technique and expertise ensure results that enhance natural beauty with far superior outcomes. His precision approach and artistry has led to a reputation for surgical excellence.

Deep Plane vs. Traditional Facelift

A common concern for facelift patients is the fear of a result that looks overdone, pulled, and unnatural, visibly altering the features. In a traditional facelift, the SMAS layer is usually tightened using sutures, which can create tension on the skin, creating an unpleasant, tightly-pulled look. By contrast, the deep plane facelift releases specific ligaments, allowing the soft tissues to be lifted free from that tension for a far smoother, more natural look. Dr. Alemi’s deep plane technique vertically repositions soft tissues, restoring lost volume in the midface and softening nasolabial folds without filler or fat grafting. This approach leads to a youthful, refreshed look that appears entirely natural.

Addressing The Neck

Facial aging often goes hand in hand with changes in the neck. The platysma muscle, which is continuous with the lower face as the tissues stretch, leads to the development of jowls and neck bands. Dr. Alemi frequently combines a deep plane facelift with a neck lift or platysmaplasty for comprehensive facial rejuvenation.

This advanced surgical procedure tightens the neck muscles like a corset, smoothing away neck bands for an appealing, elegant, youthful neck appearance. A neck lift removes sagging skin and excess fat to restore youthful definition. Salivary gland reduction may sometimes be performed to refine the jawline and neck further. With Dr. Alemi’s artistic, meticulous surgical techniques, the surgery creates a defined and youthful facial profile.

When Will I Enjoy the Results of a Deep Plane Facelift?

Recovery times vary, but most patients experience two weeks of bruising and swelling. The initial results are revealed in about two to four weeks once swelling and bruising have subsided. The full recovery may take a few months, but many patients feel comfortable returning to social activities and revealing their refreshed, youthful appearance in three to four weeks.
