Rhinoplasty Overview

What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, also known as a "nose job", is a surgery designed to reshape or alter the appearance of the nose. The word comes from the Greek “rhinos,” meaning “nose.” Our rhinoplasty in NYC with Dr. Sean Alemi can resolve a range of concerns, including nose size, shape, symmetry, and proportion, and treat functional issues affecting healthy breathing.

Cosmetic Rhinoplasty

Your nose is the central feature of your face. How it looks plays a significant role in your overall facial appeal. Cosmetic rhinoplasty focuses on enhancing the nose to complement your other features in the most natural, balanced way. Rhinoplasty or a “nose job” can achieve any of the following nose shape or size issues:

  • Reduction or augmentation of the nasal bridge: Correcting a dorsal hump or enhancing the nose bridge height.
  • Reshaping the nasal tip: Refining the nasal tip to create a more balanced, appealing look.
  • Narrowing or widening nose width: Adjusting the base of the nose to create a more balanced proportion.
  • Correction of asymmetry or deviations: Ensuring the nose appears balanced and symmetrical.
  • Correcting nose drooping: Addressing a nose that appears too prominent due to a drooping or bulbous tip.
  • Correction of previously performed rhinoplasty: Revising earlier surgeries to achieve a better, more attractive outcome.

Functional Rhinoplasty

At Alemi Facial Plastic Surgery, Dr. Alemi also performs functional rhinoplasty procedures. These surgeries are focused on correcting structural issues within the nose that can impair breathing. When performed by a double-board-certified plastic surgeon, functional rhinoplasty can have the added benefit of cosmetic enhancements in the same surgery. Functional rhinoplasty can alleviate symptoms such as nasal congestion, snoring, or sleep apnea and correct a deviated septum or collapsed nasal passages.

How Is Rhinoplasty Performed?

The procedure may involve various techniques, including:

  • Closed rhinoplasty: Incisions are made inside the nostrils, leaving no visible scars.
  • Open rhinoplasty: A small external incision across the tissue separating the nostrils (columella) to access all nasal structures.

Recovery After Your Nose Job

After your rhinoplasty in Manhattan, your job will be to sit back, rest, relax, and recover before returning to your busy schedule. Immediately after surgery, a small plastic splint will be placed on the bridge of your nose to help it maintain the newly created shape as it heals. The splint will be removed after one week, but you may choose to stay at home until the splint is removed.

Recovery varies among patients but generally involves swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort in the initial healing phase. Most individuals can return to normal activities within one to two weeks. Please avoid strenuous activities and do not engage in contact sports or any activity that could impact on the nose structure until Dr. Alemi gives you the go-ahead.

Will rhinoplasty affect my breathing?

Are rhinoplasty results permanent?

Yes, the structural changes are permanent, though the nose continues to age naturally over time.

Can rhinoplasty be combined with other procedures?

Yes, it is often combined with chin augmentation, facelifts, or septoplasty to achieve facial balance and harmonious results.

What should I expect immediately after surgery?

Expect swelling, bruising, and a nasal splint for the first 1–2 weeks, along with mild discomfort that can be managed with medication.

Is revision rhinoplasty common?

Revision rhinoplasty is sometimes needed to refine results or address functional issues, especially if prior surgery did not meet aesthetic or breathing goals.

Can rhinoplasty address a droopy nasal tip?

Yes, rhinoplasty can lift and refine a droopy nasal tip for improved facial harmony and a more youthful appearance.

Can rhinoplasty fix a crooked nose?

Rhinoplasty can straighten the nose structurally and cosmetically, often involving septoplasty if the deviation affects breathing.

Is rhinoplasty suitable for teenagers?

Rhinoplasty is typically recommended after facial growth is complete, usually around age 15–16 for girls and 16–18 for boys, depending on individual development.

What risks should I be aware of?

Risks include infection, bleeding, asymmetry, scarring, and temporary swelling or numbness. Choosing an experienced, board-certified surgeon minimizes these risks.
